Learn More About Our Clipper Blade Sharpening Process

We disassemble and clean the entire clipper blade assembly.
Big Red Clipper Blade Sharpener
Magnet placement is key to achieving a sharp edge.

We start by talking to you about what brought you to us and why you believe you need your blades sharpened. Is there any specific issues you are having? Do you have any concerns that we should know about?

Then we get to work. We disassemble and clean the entire clipper blade assembly. We are careful to keep all parts together. Just as your hair stylist doesn’t cut your hair without washing it first, we believe we cannot adequately sharpen your clipper blades without cleaning everything first.

Next, we inspect the blades / parts for damage, irregular wear and tear and/or previous sharpening irregularities. Previous sharpening irregularities is the most common. We often find the heel of the comb has been ground down, most likely because it wasn’t held level during grinding and grinding of the rails is inconsistent between the front and back rails.

Then we sharpen the comb and the cutter on “Big Red”. We place a magnet on the comb or cutter, careful that it’s not too far forward or too far back. Preparation of the grinding wheel as well as levelness of the comb and cutter (relative to the grinding wheel) are key to achieving true professional clipper blade sharpening.

After sharpening is complete, we run each comb and cutter across a demagnetizer to remove metal shavings from the sharpening process. We then brush off any remaining shavings and wipe down the parts again.

Before we reassemble the blade, we adjust the tension to between 2-1/2 & 3-1/2 pounds, with the ideal being between 2-3/4 and 3-1/4. We then reassemble the blade, adding oil between the comb and cutter rails, and adding oil to the guide rail. We want your freshly sharpened blades to slide back and forth effortlessly - without being too loose due to incorrect tension. Since your cutting blade should not extend beyond the tips of the comb, when we reassemble we do our very best to ensure the distance between the tips of the comb and cutter are consistent across the clipper.

Your clipper blades are now ready to take on their next grooming project!
