Expert Scissors Sharpening

While some people may successfully sharpen scissors on stones, that is not our preferred method because getting the right angle using that method is extremely difficult. Instead, we use the Twice as Sharp scissors sharpener.

When you entrust us with your scissors sharpening, we’ll ask you a few questions first such as: what do you typically cut with them? why do you believe they are not cutting like they should? and have they been previously sharpened?

Next we clamp the scissors onto the arm and perform a scratch test, and adjust the angle to get it as close to the original manufacturer’s angle as possible. What is a scratch test?

A scratch test is when we use a red Sharpie marker to indicate where a blade makes contact with a sharpening wheel, revealing the sharpening angle. By adjusting the angle of the blade in the clamp, the scratch mark should be evenly distributed across the entire beveled edge, from the back of the blade to the cutting edge. This test helps determine the correct angle to sharpen the scissors, ensuring the edge is properly formed and the blade is functional.

Then we grind on the sharpening wheel then hone on the honing wheel. If it’s where we want to be, we’re almost done. If not, we’ll repeat the process.

While the honing wheel should remove the burr, just to be sure it’s removed we take a couple of extra steps to remove it. Then we try cutting the same material you said you were cutting - whether that be paper, fabric, or upholstery. If it cuts like a champ, we’re satisfied and we’re confident you will be too.

Shears: Hollow ground with Convex Blade.

Do you sharpen Shears, Scissors or Both?

We sharpen beveled blades, but we do not sharpen hollow ground convex blades.

Why? And what’s the difference?

Hollow ground with convex blades are often use by beauticians, stylists, and professional animal groomers. They often costs hundreds of dollars and special equipment is often used to keep them sharp and in top working condition. At this time we do not have the equipment or expertise to sharpen these types of shears.

To properly sharpen Convex Shears, specific equipment, training and experience is needed. The cost to sharpen a pair starts at about $30 and goes up from there.

Our current equipment is set up to sharpen beveled blade scissors and we have the training and experience to bring them back to life, and make them Twice as Sharp as they currently are. At this time, this is the only type of scissors/shears we sharpen.
